UMI Rector: AI Must Be Humane — A Strong Message at the Launch of the Film "Kesempatan"

Makassar, umi.ac.id — Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI) officially launched a short film titled "Kesempatan" (Opportunity), part of the UMI Short Movies Series, on Thursday (5/3) at 4:30 PM WITA at the Aljibra Auditorium of UMI. The event was also streamed online via the UMI Makassar YouTube channel and the campus's official social media networks.

The launch became an important moment to convey the message that technological development, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), must remain grounded in human values. In his remarks, the Rector of UMI, Prof. Dr. H. Hambali Thalib, affirmed that "AI must not be separated from ethics, empathy, and manners."

According to him, creative works such as "Kesempatan" are proof of UMI's transformation into an educational institution that focuses not only on academic achievement but also encourages works that touch the humane side. He emphasized that technological progress must be balanced with moral awareness so that it provides broader benefits for life.

The Rector also appreciated the film as an educational medium relevant to the younger generation. He hoped its message would serve as a reminder that amid the busyness and dynamics of modern life, attention to family—especially parents—must not be neglected.

Meanwhile, UMI Vice Rector II, Prof. Zakir Sabara, as the film's producer, explained that "Kesempatan" was born from the spirit of presenting digital literacy through an approach close to the reality of Generation Z. He affirmed that "the AI students learn is not merely advanced technology, but a means to build character, strengthen empathy, and guide wiser decision-making."

"Kesempatan" tells the story of a student so absorbed in busyness that he ignores a simple message from his mother. A sudden change in life haunts him with regret, until the presence of AI becomes a bridge in the process of self-reflection, acceptance, and revival. The message affirms that technological sophistication means nothing without sensitivity of the heart.

The film's uniqueness lies in its cast, all of whom are UMI students. This provides space for creative self-actualization and proof that the campus can facilitate young talents to work professionally. The production also strengthens the campus creative ecosystem, from ideation to the distribution of educational content.

"Kesempatan" is the first of seven short films UMI will produce on themes close to young people's lives, such as family, the future, technology, and human values. Through this initiative, UMI affirms its commitment to presenting positive narratives and constructive digital literacy.

Through this launch, UMI also delivered a message to the public not to postpone attention to parents, to use AI wisely for good, and to realize that amid various achievements, family remains the place to return to. UMI invites the public to watch "Kesempatan" and take a simple step afterwards—contacting their parents as a form of care and affection.
